DESCRIPTION:

Very rare post-incunable edition of Aulus Gellius's Noctium Atticarum,  published with the annotations of Petri Mosselani, a famed scholar of the early 16th century.

The Attic Nights is a second-century text written through the long nights of a winter spent in Attica and was the author's commonplace book where was recorded whatever was unusual or of interest from what he read or heard, whether grammatical notes or observations on science and medicine.

Lacks front title page. Still bound with what appear to be the original contemporary leather boards. Gilt decorations and spine titling remain. Beautifully embellished with many large woodcut engraved initials. Full-page printer's device at end of Noctium Atticarum.

One of the earliest editions of the annotations of Mosselani. Annotations published by Joannes Bebelium; Basilae, 1526, with index at the front.

CONDITION: Good condition; lacking front title & blank leaf; contemporary leather boards are noticeably scuffed & worn; spine leather worn and chipped, especially at head & foot; front seam cracked with splitting appearing at the uppermost portion of the seam (see photograph); internally excellent with only occasional markings or marginalia, and a few signs of water-stains & soiling; ex-libris markings on front pastedown.

BOOK MEASUREMENTS: 10 cm X 15 cm, (book is 4.5 cm thick)

TOTAL LENGTH: 420 pages for the main work, with apprx. 200 unnumbered leaves for the annotations of Mosselani
