DESCRIPTION: Renaissance Woodcut Latin Bible, including the Books of Old Testament and New Testament, as well as Books I & II of Machabaerum. This mid-16th century renaissance picture Bible, has near parchment-like paper and is illustrated with exquisite woodcut engravings of the most famous Biblical scenes. There are over two-hundred individual Renaissance woodcuts. Presumed 1st edition, published by Guliel Rovillium (Guillaume Rouillé) in Lyon, France, in 1567. Rouillé was a contemporary of famed printers such as Christopher Plantin, Seb Gryphius, and Joan Tornaesium (Jean de Tournes).

Rebound with 16th to 17th century vellum. Inscribed with written spine title and raised spine bands. Marbled paper coverings. Stunningly engraved title-page. Paginated, with Latin text in two columns. Exquisite engraved capitals for the first letter of each book. Engraved capital also used as first letter of Hieronymus, Prologus, & Index. Decorated with elegant headers. Profusely illustrated Apocalypse.

 

CONDITION: Fair to good condition; old vellum and coverings have experienced various rebinding and repairs; exact provenance unknown, with very few ownership signs or dedications; title page reinforced & corners renewed; inside some greater usage and finger marks, as well as signs of several minor repairs, some pages with moisture damaged edges or reinforced leaf margins, several reinforced pages, especially corners and edges of foremost & rearmost index sections; lower section discolored, several minor water stains, as well as also a large water stain mostly affecting lower standing portion of New Testament; lower margin and edge of front board displays signs of discoloration & water damage; page of Abram & Lot rebound prior to page of the Fall of Man.
