 Rare 1685 edition of this work by Marin Le Roy, sieur de Gomberville. Original 17th century leather boards with gilt spine ornamentation. Morocco spine label with gold-gilt titling. Spine with 5 raised bands. A two-part work, with 103 full-page plate engravings and explanation opposite. Several monograms A. C. for Antoine Clouzier.

Detailed engraved headers and beautiful elaborate end-pieces. Also with exquisite engraved initials. Printed in Paris, at the shop of A. Soubron. Published by Jacques Le Gras in 1685. Includes Preface, as well as Table des Devises. 12mo.

 

CONDITION:

Fair condition; old antique with original boards still strongly attached, but leather of seams chipped and cracked (especially seam of rear board) & rear board shows splitting near upper and lower cords; leather of boards shows scuffs & bumped corners with boards showing through on lower corners; leather at head of spine chipped & peeling; internally complete with darkening of paper & signs of minor soiling and foxing throughout, as well as a few minor markings & marginal tears, and with a small missing portion of pg.375-76 (text unaffected); title page is damaged with an ink stain as well as a blanched & scribbled out notation in portion between authorship (see photograph); ex-ownership signatures on front paste-down and front blank.
