DESCRIPTION:
An excellent example of this very rare 1st British edition this Jules Verne adventure story about buried treasure. Published by Sampson Low, Marston & Company in London, in November 1895, the same month as the Fenno hard-bound American edition, and shortly after the soft-wrap 1st American edition was released in June of the same year. Considered to be the 1st hardbound English edition, and certainly of higher quality than the Fenno edition.
Profusely embellished with 73 B&W full-page illustrations; 74 called for (lacking the illustration of pg. 81). Decorative green cloth hardboards. Lustrous gilt page edges on all 3 sides. Pictorial front cover decorated with gilt titling and embossed illustration of the pinioned and gagged Tyrcomel. Pictorial title-page with illustrated frontispiece, and end-papers & pastedowns with decorative floral inlay.
One of the more rare editions of the many Jules Verne novels. This story follows Captain Antifer, who, upon receipt of a document with map co-ordinates to a secret location, journeys on an adventure to discover whatever is to be found there.
