DESCRIPTION:
Celebrated epic Arthurian poem by Heinrich von dem Turlin, who is considered unsurpassed by any other contemporary writer for his knowledge of French Arthurian literature. Written in middle high German, the poem consists of 30,000 lines presented in rhyming couplets, dating from appr. 1220 AD. Here we have the exceptionally rare, and hard to find, 1852 first edition, collated and edited by Gottlob Heinrich Friedrich Scholl (1802-1870). This is the oldest surviving edition, other than fragments of medieval manuscripts and one complete manuscript. The later 15th century Rhineland manuscript. is the only known complete medieval manuscript of this Grail legend in existence.
A Germanic chansons de geste with Sir Gawain as the role of the Grail hero. It also includes the story of The magician & Shapeshifter, Gansguoter, Two Sisters Rivaling for a Magic Bridle, A Mule with the Ability to Safely Carry its Master through the Terrors of a Nightmare to Safety, and an Ensorceled Revolving castle which is adorned with severed human heads.
With the title von dem Turlin intimates that the poem itself is a gem-set diadem, consisting of the various Arthurian tales and episodes that he has set in the gold of his verse.

CONDITION: Very good condition: scuffing of hardboards; separation of paper along front interior seam, (tenderness of binding though still securely jointed); 1 inch marginal rip of front fly-leaf; ex-libris markings from the library of a professor in Germany; a well-preserved scholarly edition of a near extinct medieval Arthurian epic.
