DESCRIPTION:

La Gerusalemme liberata is an epic poem by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso which was first published in 1581. It is mythified version of the First Crusade. A new translation into French, 1st edition thus. Complete in 2 Volumes.

The anonymous translation is that of Charles François Lebrun (1739 - 1824);

Published in 1774 by J.B.G. Musier, Paris, France. De L'Imprimerie de J.G. Clousier, rue St. Jacques, 1774. Frontispiece engraving of the attendants at the Cross is by M. Desrays. Divided into 20 chapters; Volume 1 (chap. 1-10); Volume 2 (chap. 11-20). Beautiful half-page headpiece engraving & chapter headers. Original brown calf leather boards. Title-page engraving.

Spine decorated with title label & volume label in morocco leather. Labels on either volume differ in color & likewise the gilt ornaments are similarly floral yet differ with respect to one another. Lavish marbled endpapers. 2nd volume still shows gilt framing around front & back boards. Gold gilt dentelles along board edges. Floral gilt ornamentation on spine Red page edges.

CONDITION: Good condition; appears to be a mismatched set with spine decorations showing slight differences in their ornamentation; boards soundly attached with some damage of the leather; spine ends worn and some loss of gilt decorations; second volume with 1 inch separation starting at top front seam, leather of both volumes shows extensively bumped corners as well as scuff marks & scratches, with a gouge in the front board (see photograph); pages show occasional foxing; first volume with small tear at the margin of pg 105-106 and torn portion of pg.99-100 (reattached with scotch tape), 2nd volume with aged note written in pencil occupying top half portion of front blank paper, as well as signed inscription dated 1836 on rear blank end-paper, else both volumes with no other internal marks; text in excellent condition, a very nice example.
