Description: François Gassman, Tarot de Marseille, Type II, Geneva, Switzerland, c.1840-70, 78 of 78 cards, woodblock printed and stencil painted. The Major Arcana and courts are full-length figures; cards with French titles, Roman numerals, Italian suits and square corners. The 2 of coins reads, "Fabriquees Par Gassmann, Cartier A Geneve."
There are several differently coloured versions of the Gassmann tarot. This is an edition similar to one found in the former Kaplan collection (2006, 29). [Kaplan I, 163; BM 1882,0211.89-166], distinguished by a blue dog instead of brown, Le Bateleur with a two-color jacket instead of blue, L'Imperatrice wearing a brown skirt instead of blue, and other differences.
