Very scarce edition of this poem of romantic chivalry in the crusades and of its title character, literally Raging Roland. Ariosto's work is 38,736 lines long in total, making it one of the longest poems in European literature. Written in a poetical Italian rhyme.

Charming rarely seen pocket 16mo complete in one volume. Contains rare woodcuts by Petit Bernard, published by Guglielmo Rouillio, in 1570. Contains all forty-six Cantos as well as five Canti nuovi. Each Canto preceded with an Argomento & ended with an Allegorie. Delightful little engraved initials. Includes a 6-page Biography of M. Lodovico Ariosto. Paginated on both sides. With index of names at rear.

Bound with contemporary vellum. Spine title is perished, front vellum cover marked with written notation, binding a little loose, light water-stain affecting last several hundred pages, early underlining & marginal notations in a few discrete spots, light scattered foxing, otherwise clean internally;

CONDITION: Acceptable condition; vellum strained and warped along spine, hand written notation on front cover, as well as soiling of vellum, wrinkling & a few small stains and scuffs; internally complete & collated, with minimal soiling, age darkening, occasional underlining, a few instances of marginal written notations & a few minor stains; previous ownership signature on title-page; light water stain affecting last section of approximately 300 pages (see photographs).
