Description: François Gassman, Tarot de Marseille, Type II, Geneva, Switzerland, c.1840-60, 78 of 78 cards, woodblock printed and stencil painted. The Major Arcana and courts are full-length figures; cards with French titles, Roman numerals, Italian suits and square corners. The 2 of coins reads, "Fabriquees Par Gassmann, Cartier A Geneve."
There are several differently coloured versions of the Gassmann tarot. This is one of the earlier editions distinguished by a baby blue and distinctive brown, where the yellow and darker blue are somewhat muted compared to a version in the former Kaplan collection (2006, 29). CONDITION: Good condition, complete; 78 of 78 cards, some wear, soiling, and patina, some corner wear, no significant damages, though deck is slightly curved and some cards are darkened; La Justice and the Ace of Wands have a minor surface crease/wrinkle at the middle of card; the versos show specific wear and soiling along the left-edge from being handled and shuffled; the evidence of wear suggests this deck was used and held regularly (see photographs).
