Copiously illustrated, Dutch martyr book with 150 engravings by Jacobus Savry. 

[Christian Martyrs] Bruin, Class. Korte schets van het leeven en sterven der martelaaren, getrokken uit de geschiedenissen van den Heere Joannes Gysius.Amsterdam: 1719. 4t0, 24 cm,  [20], 303, [5] p. : il; Woodcut ornament on title page, decorated initials, and 151 engravings. The engravings were used in the 1657 and 1658 editions of A. van Haemstede's martyrology. Includes index. Each engraving is marked with a Roman numeral. The last engraving is marked as CLII (152)with the 16th engraving mistakingly marked as XVII (17). Collated complete, all pages and engravings are present. Vellum bound. Front blank with 1771 dedication signature in old hand. 

CONDITION: Good condition overall, text block and illustrations in very good condition, binding fair to good, with issues at spine and with warped, rigid boards. Vellum binding with stains and old tape repairs chipping at head and foot of spines with lacks. Front hinge cracked at top; front blank with dedication signature, dated 1771; beginning at page 242 until the end of the book there is a circular warp and indentation to the pages, see pictures. Minor stains, foxing and worming throughout.
