First published in 1678, Jezus en de ziel (Jesus and the Soul) is one of Jan Luyken's earliest and most popular emblem books. Each of the emblems is accompanied by a Bible verse, poem, or other reference.
Luyken was a Dutch poet, painter, and engraver, trained by his father, Kasper Luyken, in Amsterdam.
CONDITION: Good condition bound in contemporary vellum, with some discolouration, bumped corners; book is collated complete with only two missing back blanks; some foxing and other stains; hinges cracked at front and back, shaken, with some pages loose (including frontispiece, p.145-176 loose from top only); engravings all present and in good shape; attached endpaper ripped at hinge; D4 with large side rip; F8 with small tear bottom edge.
