DESCRIPTION:
[Emblem Book/Emblemata] [Otta van Veen]. [Emblemes d'Amour]. [Paris?] : [s.n.], [16--?]. In-4, [51] leaves: ill; fol. 48 plates framed at mid-page, with motto and explanatory text, all framed with a frieze. A bound collection with 48 engravings of winged cherubs after Otto van Veen's "Amorum Emblemata," published in 1608. Each engraving is accompanied by a poem or motto below. This collection is missing two engravings and the title page. Some plates have haphazard watercolour highlights in brown/beige. Reused soft vellum covers with inked drawings of a horse, other doodles and words/notes. Handwritten notes on the recto and verso of the front flyleaves indicate that there were originally 52 plates (48 loves and 4 seasons); however, there were only 50 engravings as per BM 1889,0816.6.1-45; Adams, Rawles and Saunders, Vol. II F.607; Uki. UG. Sp Coll S.M. 1866. Handwritten note dated July 24, 1698.
CONDITION: Very good condition bound in reused limp contemporary vellum, with discolouration, stains, corners bumped, large chip at the back upper spine and back upper hinge; attached endpapers lifting from middle piece; missing the title page and two engravings; some foxing, discolouration, and ink stains; a number of upper corner creases, small rips, and tears, from dog eared pages; one emblem page with full marginal tear (not affecting text or picture).
